Bauhaus spread

Apologies for bombarding the blog.

Here's the Bauhaus spread I've come up with.

Also, Intro and Contents headings I think could be better. Any suggestions?

For headers, I've used each section's typefaces also. Will send thru the latest PDF now.

Intro / Contents spread

Sup y'all

I've just done the intro / contents spread and chose to use the corresponding typefaces for each section to hint at the typefaces used for the publication. Section 2 and 3 are leaded slightly larger to relate to the section 1 leading better.

Let me know what you think of the ffi logo crop too. The previous two publications have the logo on each page.

Headers

Hey guys

Just decided to add headers. Reading through Justin's copy and they're too good to exclude.

Is anyone doing the contents?

If not I'll just type it up simply. Same with intro heading. Thinking helvetica.

Neatening the grid

Hi all

Herman and I went through the publication we all discussed on Monday to neaten up the grid and refine everything. We ended up keeping the 'h' grid using the old Bauhaus typeface, which I edited the contour of to make a more streamlined graphic. Feel free to comment.

I also went in afterwards and hand kerned the ragged lines and got rid of 'widows'.

He and I are meeting tomorrow arvo again to continue with section 3 and add in more elements that come in from now.

fonts/graphics/logo

Sorry I wasn't in class. Can style guide send me a list of the fonts used now that that's decided? Also, graphics please send me any artwork or post it on here, so I can make sure I design the website to mesh well with the publication. Lastly, was there a new logo designed or are we going with one of the old versions?

Love how everything is looking so far!

Thanks,
Emilia

Graphics all is good

Hi,

So far all the content for section 1 is fine, section 2 is fine except question 8 will have to go into the last section. So I guess its just the last section, as it is having the least text, will need to be edited down to 5 questions max (at the moment there are 10 so i guess some of them can combine)

I will send out the draft so far of the spreads, fonts are not accurate (I will put in correct fonts tomorrow as I will finally have internet to download) The final section is not finalised yet and we can explain the graphic elements tomorrow as some of the titles and fonts are just placeholders for original artwork.

Re: Graphics/Editorial Update

Hi,

I will read them over and try to stick to the 100 word max. the problem is the Q& A format, needs to have a certain amount of "filler langauge" in order for it not to sound like a text book which naturally produces more words... Can we extended it to 150 words?

graphics update

Hi Editorial,

I have read all your content and a lot of it is quite valid in the points we are trying to talk about. Its not just a matter of removing questions, but the content needs to be shortened so that all the points are still there yet in shorter versions. The graphics team is finding it difficult to just pick which questions are relevant because a lot of the answers are relevent they are too long though. We really need a 100word max on the answers and as mentioned before only 5 Qs section 1, 4 Qs section 2 and 4 Qs section 3. I know you are probably sick of reading through it but we really need to get it shortened and edited so that its easier to work with.

At the moment the graphics are doing (just so we are on the same page)
Section 1 : 1.Title which is Script handwritten,
2. Gothis lettering pull quotes 3. Artwork reminiscent of 50s handlettering signage
Section 2: 1. title which shows the mechanism of designing a letter, 2. The modernism 'H' which contains text, 3. A Bauhaus inspired artwork saying 'handwriting is dead'
Section 3: A few pages still to be determined but 1. pull quote Handwriting lingo, 2. artwork, handwrtitting within a form, showing influence on graphic design.

We can show you what we have come up with tomorrow

Thanks
Hey all--

The communication has been awesome lately so keep that up...editorial team--great job on the content, hopefully the everyone else likes it as well. I noticed a few simple typos and edited a bit, but I'm assuming you guys probably found the same errors as I did. I can send you my edited copies though if you would like. Or I will bring them into class tomorrow.

Sorry I have been kind of MIA lately, I sprained my ankle pretty badly on Thursday and I have been in and out of doctors offices and resting as much as possible. I still can't really walk on it so i am going to try to hire some crutches so that I can make it to Monday's meeting. I WILL GET THERE SOMEHOW I PROMISE! Anyone who wasn't there last week or has forgotten, we're still meeting during normal class time tomorrow so that we can come together one last time as a group and talk about final thoughts. We may even have to get together again if that is necessary, but we'll talk about that closer to the due date. As of right now, I think we are going at a pretty good speed.

Emilia, how is everything going with the web stuff? Have you been in contact with the graphics team? Let me know if you want to get together sometime this week and work on the web part if you have enough content from graphics. We can talk more about this tomorrow.

On that note, see you all tomorrow and keep working hard!

Interesting text: 'The stroke theory of writing'

Just finishing off editorial stuff on my end and thought I'd share this reference, which has relevance to our publication.

Noordzij, Gerrit, 2005, The stroke theory of writing, Hyphen Press, London

Here's Noordzij's investigative distinction of writing and type:
'It is inadmissible to suggest that type is writing, because such speculations undermine the prejudice (a prejudice is a viewpoint that may not be placed in question). When the facts still compel us to compare type with handwriting, the facts are suppressed. The history of the 'romain du roi' is a good example of this. The 'romain du roi' was cut around 1700 according to the directives of a scientific commission. The proposal was worked out on a grid - the traditional way of transposing drawings to scale. The minutes of the commission confirm what anyone can ascertain: the designs follow in detail the handwriting of Nicholas Jarry, who worked around 1650 as calligrapher for the Cabinet du Roi. This history leaves us no other choice than to view the 'romain du roi' - the type - in terms of the handwriting of Jarry. But if this were the case the foundation beneath the sciences of writing would fall away. Scholars forestall the landslide by keeping the affair under wraps. In its place they present the 'romain du roi' as a turning point in history. The grid would then have had to have been the true starting point of the design, and the typographical letter would have become, once and for all, independent of handwriting.' (p17)
